PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA Tucked into the armpit of Winn Street in the Valley is Flamingo, possibly the best new addition to the Brisbane cafe scene. Brilliant and slightly camp kitsch theming, a menu suited to every persuasion and staff with the kind of enthusiasm you can’t fake, make it a fun destination. The theme – black walls adorned with fluorescent palm trees, fake asphalt grass, colourful clear plastic stools, yellow and white striped awnings and a bright pink kitchen – is embraced and executed with perfection; a rarity and a welcome addition to the sleek modern or retro vibe that seems to be taking over town.
The menu is compiled of simple, pared-back food. Each dish is a meal with a purpose, whether you want to calm the nerves, detox the body or warm the heart. Think mum’s meatballs, open cheese melts and juices like the “nanna crystal”; a spectacular combination of pear, Granny Smith apples and mint. Perfection is also found in Rayner’s corned beef, bread and butter pickles, cream cheese and crisps on rye which are topped by a sprinkle of seasoning from the 50s salt and pepper shakers which adorn the tables…and finished with a pink napkin used to wipe sauce from your chin. Oh, and while the banoffee pie may stop your heart, it will definitely warm your soul.
