PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAClaret House Wine Bar is the latest entry into a dining scene which is known for its eclectic mix of styles and venues. In terms of decor, Claret House does a fine job of balancing avant garde artistic touches with charming, almost rustic, features. Eschewing the dogmatic whitewash and black lacquer of most of its contemporaries, conversation starters such as chandeliers made from the skeletal remains of antique chairs sit comfortably alongside unfinished wood elements and exposed lighting. With a palette of warm reds and browns, Claret House instantly puts you at ease and encourages a pleasantly enjoyable dining experience.
Predominately a wine bar, the list cuts 150 deep, and a selection of 20 varietals by the glass ensures that the fussy drinker will always find something to suit. A full back bar of spirits and various local and imported boutique beers are also available. The seasonal menu is created with social affairs in mind, sporting only three mains, while almost everything else on the menu could be shared. Chef Dan Cossart’s dishes take a rustic journey through France and Spain, with dishes such as duck pate served with cornichons, burnt orange caramel and sourdough slices just waiting to be slathered, and an impressive charcuterie platter with real Spanish jamon. With an address that demands excellence, Claret House Wine Bar more than meets the standards for contemporary dining excellence.
