PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAStepping down into the small, crazy space you’ll find a maze of street cafe furniture, a swell collection of board games and paperbacks, and a ceiling-high anthology of peculiar aesthetics – a few of which no doubt break some “well to do” cultural norms. Also, as it happens, the food, coffee and tea is just as tempting! Meals from a scrumptious international offering, with a commendable dabbling in African and Thai, include a rendang coconut beef curry and a tasty tofu stir-fry. Not to mention the cafe's truly ingenious decision to put haloumi cheese on a pizza.
A regular haunt for locals, this intriguing little cove offers something a tad different with an arty atmosphere, faint lighting and alluring back-seat charm. Raw musical talent squeezes into a cosy back corner a few nights a week belting jazz, blues or folk out. I knew I was in for a mega treat when a German mama came in carrying containers filled with freshly-baked goods. The homemade cherry pie is a great tart and the baked cheesecake holds its own turf. A rich choc-something-or-other cake also didn’t stay in the cabinet longer then a jiffy. Lesson: don’t procrastinate too long – the cakes are quick to go. So put your vollies on, grab your hessian bag and nab a comfy chair, it’s gonna be a long night!
