To resounding success, the Dettloff family have recreated Germany in Highgate Hill, a refreshing dot in the multicultural landscape of Brisbane. The Black Forest has been booked out for almost the whole of winter with people coming from all over to try the home-made sausages for which chef Richard Dettloff is famous; and with Oktoberfest not far away, the steady flow of fans of all things German isn't likely to stem.
The signature dishes are the traditional Bavarian-style oven-roasted duck and pork hock, both requiring four hours' notice from customers. Served with Bavarian dumplings and sauerkraut, Richard recommends these dishes be accompanied by one of the many Austrian and German wheat beers he has behind the bar. There are also many gluten-free options on the menu, a vegetarian meal option and exciting dishes for children such as Peter Pan's favourite dish, not to mention the multitude of freshly made desserts. Everything on offer is made in-store and ingredients are sourced from only quality suppliers. The meats are the best quality money can buy and fat-trimmed for lean and healthy portions. For some comfort food or something different, this South German Chalet is well worth a visit.
