Profiled by deGroots MediaFor one of the best coffees that Kelvin Grove has to offer and a hearty breakfast and lunch menu to boot, The Blue Lotus is sure to impress. Being a big breakfast fan myself it was great to see a well-priced and well-dressed morning line up. The Blue Lotus has been in Kelvin Grove Village for since 2006 having previously been situated in Park Road. Originally famous for their desserts, The Blue Lotus has refined its menu and approach to suit a wider base of lunch-going clientele. A truly seasoned veteran of the lunchtime menu is the club sandwich, and The Blue Lotus certainly pulls out the stops here. Layered inside delicious toasted Turkish bread you will find mesclun lettuce, tomato, cucumber, Swiss cheese, grilled chicken and freshly crisped bacon. The other must-try is the house favourite, “The Shem” special. Also served on toasted Turkish bread this example of sandwich royalty boasts grilled eggplant, roast pumpkin, avocado, mushroom and egg.
The Blue Lotus is fully licensed and also accepts BYO, and though there is room for up to 35 they do get fairly busy around breakfast time (especially on Friday mornings). Price-wise, the menu is fairly decent value when compared to other such establishments; the club sandwich a surprising $8.50 and eggs benedict a reasonable $10. The ambience has quite an oriental appeal with comfortable low-set leather seating and a touch of culture in the giant calligraphy brushes adorning the ceiling. The Blue Lotus is indeed one of the better refreshment stops at an otherwise overpriced Kelvin Grove Urban Village, for a pleasing and filling breakfast, fantastic coffee or a great cafe lunch.
