REVIEWED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAFar from being a place that one would like to avoid (as the name may suggest), A Salt & Battery has a lot going for it. From the university students at the St Lucia campus just down the road to the middle-aged and elderly out to enjoy a Sunday afternoon and a spot of sun, this is an eatery to which people flock like seagulls, determined to enjoy some seriously good seafood.
It has a simple air to it with basic furnishings and sometimes a bit of a wait in the queue to order, but the seafood is fresh and there are lots of choices. While they do all the normal things a good fish and chippery does, they also have a few extras up their sleeve. There are fresh Tassie Pacific and Sydney rock oysters on display that come natural or Kilpatrick, as well as a number of healthy salads to choose from if you don’t feel like battering your insides. Try the salt and pepper white bait or the Atlantic salmon salad. To spoil yourself there is a cold seafood platter that is excellent to share among friends, and the bottle shop next door is well placed for finding a nice drop to accompany your meal.
