The Fox is one of the smaller pubs in Darwin’s CBD, but it is perhaps the most authentic. Rather than overdress itself with flashy decor and overly fancy food, The Fox prides itself on being a good, reputable ale house with a solid menu full of simple, value-for-money pub staples. Apart from some salads and burgers, there are just four main courses – a chicken breast, local barramundi and two cuts of steak (rump and scotch fillet). This may seem somewhat bare compared to other bar/cafes with crammed menus, but the basic fare serves The Fox well.

The dishes are all exceptionally cooked, well presented, and come with a variety of sauces and sides. Food at this price rarely comes in the huge portions offered up here – the rump steak will present a challenge to even the hardiest of beef eaters. The chicken breast is juicy; the fish thick and tasty. Make sure you wash your meal down with one of the myriad of local and imported beers on tap, and ensure you’re around for the fun midweek events – Tuesday sees Australian Idol wannabes strut their stuff Karaoke-style, while Thursday is quiz night when the punters pack in to wage trivia war. Relax and enjoy the atmosphere with good food, friends and ales.
