The new Supreme Court Cafe (previously Rumpole’s) in Darwin’s city centre is a short stroll from the mall which offers views across the esplanade to the sea. Inside the imposing Supreme Court building, the cafe is a cool, quiet and secluded nook which looks out onto a panorama of trees. It is situated past an intricate Milky Way mosaic that is set into the floor of the court house but this is well worth a look from the gallery above. The building also houses an outstanding display of Aboriginal artwork – a must-see for visitors to the Top End.

The cafe is a brilliant place to stop over either before or after a cultural art adventure. Owners Sue and John Leeder have created an elegant, tranquil yet friendly space where children are most welcome and food is made daily on the premises. The all-day breakfast, snacks and lunches offer a selection of fresh, healthy options. Raisin toast with creamy ricotta and sliced strawberries are a delicious breakfast selection as is a fresh fruit salad with yoghurt. Expect generous portions served with immaculate attention to detail (like a juicy orange slice adorning every freshly-squeezed orange juice). Soy milkshakes are also available as a cool sweet option for anybody with lactose intolerance. On the food side, Turkish bread open grills, sandwiches and salads make appetising lunches, as do the bagels that the cafe is becoming renowned for. Try the signature bagel with smoked salmon, Spanish onion, cream cheese and capers.
