Eco-dining meets elegance at Saffrron in Parap. Darwin’s most popular Indian restaurant sources ingredients from local markets and the results are sensational.

Since opening in 2008, Saffrron has beguiled its clientele with spice and flavour. The initial shock of eating off paper plates has given way to appreciation of an excellence which is clearly independent of fine china.

It’s heartening to see a restaurant take a leap into unknown territory and make a success of it. Saffrron has instituted an impressive list of environmental practices to reduce its carbon footprint, and is proof that indulgence and earth-awareness needn’t be diametrically opposed. Denial isn’t on the menu here.

Indian colour and sparkle scatter throughout Saffrron’s contemporary space of high ceilings. The menu proliferates with irresistible-sounding dishes spanning both the familiar and the lesser known but absolutely worth-exploring, like the Hariyali kebab entrée – a tender tandoori-baked chicken marinated in spinach, white pepper and yoghurt.

Saffrron offers economical banquets and tasting menus, and super South Indian Sundays with idli (delicate steamed rice cakes), uttappam (thick rice pancakes) and a full range of dosai (crisp curry-filled pancakes). Through this menu, South Indian chef and co-owner Selvam Kandasamy honours spice and cooking secrets taught by his grandmother. Selvam has been listed in Australia’s Top 100 Chefs and has headed high-calibre restaurants like Darwin’s Hanuman.

At Saffrron you’ll find Indian cuisine needn’t be a tongue-burning, sweat-mopping experience, although there’s plenty of chilli for your liking. For milder flavours, try pistachio murg – chicken breast in a nutty sauce touched with rosewater. Butter chicken aficionados will find a particularly fragrant offering here, scattered with freshest coriander in a biodegradable sugarcane bowl which doubles as a take-away container for those unable to finish the generous portion. The snake beans poriyal is made with fresh snake beans from Rapid Creek markets, which as Darwinites know, are fabulous. Saffrron spices those long green beans into a tasty dry curry with red lentils.

The dessert menu is long for an Indian restaurant, so save a space for soothing kulfi ice cream, heavenly carrot halwa, or gulab jamun in saffron syrup for a night finished with sweet spices.

Saffron - User Reviews

wendy:

2nd time eating here, first time was great, tonight very dissapointed, chicken was very tough and dry even in the sauce, lamb lorma very chewy, not the normal fall apart meat we have had before. A bit dissappointed that the food came out so quick, the night was over before it began. Couldn't have possibly cooked our three dishes freshly in the very short time it took to come out, so perhaps that is why it was tough.review 21/04/2012

Anniversary Couple:

As previously reviewed, it was very noisy even for a Saturday night. The food was lovely and the decor tasteful. Our first hiccup came from staff, we ordered a house dry white and got the most expensive sweet and fruity wine on the list. As for paper plates, I don't think so. The amount of chlorine and bleach that goes into making pulp white and chemicals to keep the shape far out ways the more eco friendly cermaic plate and some hot water to wash them. For $150 for a dinner for two, including the two $8.50 flat 'Passion Pop' wines, it is hard to see value for money. Might be worth giving them a go for takeaway, (that seemed to be thriving, although pickup is in the middle of the restaraunt). Bottom line - I liked the food and decor but paper plates, inexperienced wine service and over inflated prices made the evening dissapointing.review 12/02/2012

Soul Food Lover:

What a disappointment! The place portrays itself as a fine dining with Eco-friendly and experienced chef. I rate the food as ordinary and infact to some extent below standard to what is expected of authentic Indian fine cuisine. The fravy or so called Curry was reused for 3 different dishes ordered with slight variation. Very similar to what you would get at a commercial Indian restaurant. Mutter Paneer had excessive lemon and the fetta Cheese had melted in the curry. The meat in the butter chicken was chared from the outside, quite contrary to the authentic style of cooking a butter chicken. Butter Naan was COOL instead of being served warm. Rice was sparingly less for even a single serve and the Eco Friendly plates were nearly falling apart by the end of the meal. Place is well decorated, but can be noisy on Friday's and Saturdays. The service though was very polite and courteous. Probably worth a visit once, but not the second time. 3 course Dinner of 2 costed $143 (No alcohol included). I prefer the Fusion Indo-Indian restaurant 'Garam Masala' in the city to this.review 05/02/2012

Fantastic menu to choose from. Good service but can be a little slow. Great decor and relaxing environment. Extremely clean. Quality of food is superb. Price is reasonable. The lemon and lime sarbat drink is a must try. Overall, great venue and meal.review 11/11/2011
