PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA Hop along to Four Birds just off Smith Street mall, and get yourself a loyalty card immediately – this is a place you’ll want to visit often. With its cheeky chook logo, Four Birds is making a mark on Darwin’s coffee and catering scene. Snugly tucked into a corner of Star Village, the open courtyard with branching frangipani trees is an intimate and friendly venue. The cafe favours low tables and wacky seats made out of upturned packing crates with colourful cushions on top. The menu is simple with loads of wholesome choices alongside decadent cakes.
Four Birds owes its genesis to owner Louisa Ainsworth, who is delighted with her hole-in-the-wall success. Birds two, three and four are Louisa’s Mum and sisters, making this a true bird’s nest! The food is prepared from recipes passed down through generations, and with a part Italian background, it’s no surprise to find items like potato croquettes with Napoli sauce alongside Grandma’s homemade chutney. Lunch offers Italian-style gourmet paninis and a fresh salad mixes. For breakfast it’s hard to go past the fabulous wholemeal bagels. These come hot and crunchy and sliced in two with a healthy but scrumptious topping. The ricotta with freshly sliced kiwifruit bagel comes dripping with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. This dish is sure to fly with top end munchers and brunchers.
