It’s romance to the hilt and a nature lover’s paradise at Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort, an easy hour’s drive out of Darwin along the highway towards Litchfield National Park. The resort restaurant is aptly named Eagles Nest – look for one perched on a treetop in the drowned forest end of the lake. Overlooking lawns, a jetty and a panorama of cloudscapes, waterlilies, birdlife and reflections, Eagles Nest offers air-conditioned facilities, lakeside sunset views and dining under the stars with a warm tropical breeze lifting your hair. The indoor decor of lime, tangerine and magenta with original artworks is as vibrant as the bougainvillea that edges the patio (which comes complete with turquoise spa and banana lounges). Meals entail modern Australian cuisine with Territory specialties and a good wine list. For a Top End treat, sample the crocodile gougons and local barramundi. Mains are substantial, particularly the rich pasta dishes. Save space for dessert if you can because the Bailey’s pannacotta is made in heaven!
