A visit to Darwin naturally includes a wander round the revamped waterfront area with its popular wave lagoon and spectacular Convention Centre. Just past this impressive building, Stokes Hill Wharf leads out to sea. A working wharf with a fascinating history, Stokes Hill features pearl shops and small eateries. In the dry season the wharf takes on a festive air at sundown with live bands, line dancers and queues of the hungry ordering fish and chips, salads and Asian dishes from the array of takeaway eateries. Kids toss chips down the precipitous wharfside to thankful moonfish, large as dinner plates, swishing silvery sides in the harbour spotlights. It’s busy and bustling and fun, but if you weave through the crowds to the far end of the wharf, you’ll find Crustaceans, which is a rather different kettle of fish.

Crustaceans offers romance, Top End-style - alfresco dining under the stars, fish caught locally from the tropical sea. Darwin residents visit for special occasions – a birthday perhaps, or a wedding extravaganza. Tourists gravitate to Crustaceans for its unique location and reputable seafood. In the wet season, dining might be indoors, with a view of thunderstorms flashing lightning over the ocean.

The entrance beyond the crowded benches is low-key. The restaurant is a charming mix of elegance and concrete with the outdoor dining area perched on the very tip of the wharf, and the industrial feel softened by semi-dark light. A table nearest the water affords intimate conversation, and, if you’re lucky, a view of dolphins frolicking only metres from your seat.

I ordered the mud crab with the Singaporean chilli sauce, the meat was delicious and the sauce was lovely (just enough spice/chilli to tingle the palate but in my opinion a little too sweet). One problem was that one of the claws was completely empty. I had a dozen oysters as well and they were nice and fresh. My wife (not an oyster fan) thought the same. Her Moreton Bay bugs, in Mornay sauce, was very tasty. Service was good and fast. review 07/07/2011

My wife and I have dined at Crustaceans on many occasions and the quality of food and service has always been spot on. I am a lover of the 700 gram Rump steak and it's always cooked to perfection. My wife often enjoys the seafood platter or the Barra and chips. The staff are courteous and always have a ready smile and a warm greeting. Personally, I think it's one of the best restaurants in Darwin and certainly not to be missed by any who love seafood. review 01/05/2011

On our first visit to Darwin, we went to Crustaceans on a balmy Friday night. We were lucky to pick a night when a cruise ship was berthed at the next pier - so we had free entertainment as we enjoyed dinner. We had the crocodile entree and salt/pepper Moreton bay bugs. Both were fresh and delicious although both serves were small. We then moved on to Mud Crab cooked in the Singapore chili style. It was very messy and totally delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Dessert was very ordinary, the only low point to an otherwise evening. review 08/04/2009
