One of the smaller eateries in the busy Mitchell Street tourist precinct, Cafe Tonic sees a steady stream of customers enjoying good coffee, fresh juices, cakes and casual daytime fare. Bright and modern, the olive green and orange colour scheme is matched to black bistro chairs and miniature padded stools, while a few tables outside are perfect for relaxing and people watching while the rest of Mitchell Street bustles past.

Tonic is one of the most popular venues for breakfast on the strip, wooing the pre-work, pre-day tour crowd with gourmet sausages, poached eggs Scandinavian (on a toasted muffin topped with smoked salmon and Hollandaise sauce), and chunky muesli and fruit salad with natural yoghurt. A compact menu of lunch selections includes Tuscan chicken salad with baby spinach, plum tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, pine nuts and herbed lemon aioli, and shallow fried squid tossed with salad greens and chilli lemon vinaigrette. For vegetarians, there’s the vegie rosti on toasted bread with goat’s cheese, walnut aioli and greens. Afterwards, give in to the temptation of a big slice of mud cake from the fridge, or cool down with a fresh fruit smoothie.
