It’s a marvellous accomplishment to find a great restaurant that’s open late in Sydney. Young Alfred is easy to miss set at the foot of Custom’s House, but in summer it makes itself known with tables edging out on to Custom’s House square, just a step back from Circular Quay. The upside down “Alfred” should give you a hint; the passionate pizza from the old Arthur’s of Oxford Street has come into classy surrounds. The pizzas are still heartbreakingly good and the service bustling and a tad bizarre – there is a lot of personality on show here. The walls are decorated with a muted green fabric (very Florence Broadhurst) and the outside tables are positioned so you can enjoy a coffee in the sun.

Young Alfred is open till midnight most nights of the week, so keep it in mind as a late night diner or sunny lunch spot – if you have a bit of time to spare, lunch can be very crowded. Helping Young Alfred settle further into their niche are the relatively low prices. Compared to the tourist dollars needed to eat around Circular Quay or at Cafe Sydney above, Young Alfred’s menu looks benignly affordable. The menu covers all the niceties of Italian cuisine: pizza, pasta and some meaty mains.
