PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAThe Kirribilli Club has had a makeover and it’s looking good. Gone are the garish carpets of old, gone are the cheap tables. Everything’s changed but the views of the bridge and harbour, which remain spectacular, and the pokies, which remain annoying, as ever. The new club’s main eatery, Watergrill, is located on the second floor of the establishment at the top of a grand staircase. It’s a pay-at-the-bar job with a few different seating options available in the open, light-filled space. High-rise bar tables and stools are clustered in one corner, quirky 70s-style seating and a soft banquette divide the room, and modern tables and chairs fill the rest of the space.
On sunny days, a few lucky punters will snare the balcony tables which boast the best vantage point for enjoying the sparkling water on sunny Sydney days. It’s not all about the decor though. The food, now prepared in an open kitchen, has also vastly improved. Seafood is a staple – try the Sydney rock oysters, the Moroccan-spiced Atlantic salmon or the scallop and prawn risotto – and a 300g grain-fed scotch fillet features alongside various pastas and stir-fries. It’s still club dining, but it’s club dining at its best.
