It’s the last place you would expect to find some of Sydney’s freshest seafood. In fact I don’t think I would have descended off Crown Street and into Tsukasa if it hadn’t been for all the great reviews. While those south of the border seem to relish hidden treasures, Sydney diners appear to be re-assured by all things flashy; if there was ever a time to shift out of your comfort zone, this is it. Probably not first date material, it’s definitely the place to come for perfectly fresh sushi and sashimi and some of the more unusual Japanese delicacies.

Many will be happy to stop at the sushi bar on the way in, and spend the night spellbound by the art of the sushi chef. The a la carte sushi menu features 22 different species of fish, and while they are not always all available due to seasonality, there is always plenty to choose from. The spider roll filled with soft-shelled crab and wasabi mayonnaise is delectable. Other house specialties include negima yake: shallot rolled in sliced beef with teriyaki sauce, shigiyaki: deep fried eggplant with sweet bean paste, or the yosenabe: a seafood and vegetable hotpot. Wash it all down with a warm sake or Japanese beer (the wine list is extremely limited).
