Did you know that the “trop” in Tropfest is actually derived from Tropicana Caffe restaurant? Art patronage and philanthropic endeavours are just part and parcel of this Darlinghurst institution.

Tropicana Caffe opened in 1980, and since then has moved locations, donated $20,000 to Sydney Children’s Hospital, opened an online store and started Australia’s largest amateur short film competition, Tropfest. Not bad for a humble Darlinghurst cafe. But many Tropicana patrons are unaware of the esteem of this institution; they simply enjoy the buzzy atmosphere, good value and famous salads of “the Trop”. Serving food until 10.30pm at night, you’ll often find the brightly lit room full of young Paddington and Darlinghurst locals enjoying the corkage-free BYO. It can get so packed and noisy that pedestrians on Victoria Street would be forgiven for thinking they were walking past a trendy pub rather than a cafe.

Inside you line up at one counter to order your food which then appears at a second counter a short while later. There is a massive range of focaccias and salads, as well as daily changing pastas and Italian-style main meals such as veal scallopine. The salads are famous for being large and filling enough to make a meal on their own and in winter soups are added to the mix. In 2004 Tropicana added a bonus feature – online ordering. Browse the menu through parameters like “meat”, “fish” or “vegetarian”, click a button and hey presto! The real question is: what will Tropicana do next?

Tropicana Caffe - User Reviews

Major Tom:

227 Victoria St Darlinghurst 6am-10:30pm daily Menu: Italian-influenced casual dining Recommended Dishes: Pollo, Chicken Salad, Big Breakfast If you put a bag on my head and took me into the Tropicana, only removing it once inside, I could tell you within a matter of moments that we were in Darlinghurst. Maybe it’s the faint smell of grease in the air, maybe it’s the clientele, ranging from the grungy to the business-minded, or maybe it’s the large street front windows, opening out onto Victoria Street. Whatever the reason, Tropicana Caffe is inner city casual dining at its finest. Separating it from its competition is its absurdly long menu, and, most notably, its lack of pretention. The portions are generous, the service swift, and the atmosphere familiar. I chose the "Pollo", a toasted chicken sandwich with avocado, mayo, cheese and iceberg lettuce, and white bread. The order at the counter system is a touch chaotic, but fully fledged Tropicanites will tell you that's all part of the charm. I'm yet to be convinced. Of the 20 something cafes along Victoria St, it is easy to see how Tropicana has enjoyed the most longevity. Offering reasonably priced breakfasts, sandwiches, pastas and main meals, along with a selection of cakes and deserts, Tropicana has become an institution among inner city diners, and it is easy to see why.review 30/09/2011
