Tucked around a quiet corner in the enchanting inner-city suburb of Potts Point, you’ll find a charming little treasure frequented by foodies in the know and protective locals. The Sardine Room, dressed in silvery greys, is a delightful sanctuary of simple seafood and friendly banter. The flickering of vintage candelabras bounces off lush grey walls and the candle-lit interior hums with the sounds of happy diners six nights a week. Gregarious co-owner Angela Heracleous welcomes guests into her creation and guides them through the menu, explaining the nuances of each dish. The fold-out glass frontage invites the breeze in during summer and locks it out in winter, creating a cosy nook for diners.
The casual but intimate space dishes up superb seafood with culinary influences from across the globe. Decent portions are cooked simply, highlighting the freshness and quality of the produce. Start with salt and pepper squid served with confit garlic aioli and lemon or the seared scallops with roasted hazelnuts and spiced, poached apple for a tasty twist. The signature seafood pie features mussels, prawns and fish and comes with delicious kumara crisps and salad. Vegetarian meals are available upon request. Choose from the many wines available by the glass or make use of the BYO policy and pop a few corks. There’s no pretentiousness here; the staff are friendly and welcoming, the food well priced and the atmosphere casual. The Sardine Room will soon be offering two sittings, 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
