PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAHave you ever noticed that Sydney is in dire need of bars for a mature crowd? On the one hand there are pumping clubs filled with pretty young things and on the other pubs where older generations gather for a glass of wine and a chat, but what of the generation that doesn’t fit into either of these scenarios? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that The Passage is here and ready to entertain. Squeezed between Victoria Street and Darlinghurst Road, this narrow bar not only fills the space between the streets but also the gap for mature Sydney-slickers who have hung up their clubbing shoes but still want to head out to a vibrant nightspot. The Passage offers diners a contemporary menu of share plates, a small but decent wine list, a selection of cocktails and a place to socialise into the night.
Although it is a relatively small place, it offers four different areas. A front dining room with a communal marble table and a sultry lounge area dominated by a long banquette offer table service and a menu of constantly-evolving dishes featuring the likes of crispy calamari with sweet chilli oil and aioli, stuffed zucchini flowers with goat’s cheese and truffle honey and twice-cooked pork belly with corn puree and balckbean vinaigrette. The following two rooms – an area boasting a long, lit-up marble bar, chic stools and high tables and a back room sporting some extra seating – change the vibe from foodie to cocktail haven. Although food is allowed here, the focus is on cocktails like “The Passage martini” (Zubrowka vodka shaken with Amaro Montenegro, peach liquer, passionfruit and fresh apple and pineapple juices). The Passage has also recently received its outdoor license which means chairs and tables now also drink in the Darlinghurst vibe.
