I like the Dolphin Hotel. It’s not seedy, not pretentious, and it’s pretty. It has the kind of relaxed atmosphere where you never feel underdressed, and everyone is too absorbed in their own conversations to be looking too carefully at others. After extensive renovations, it’s light and open yet possesses plenty of nooks and crannies in which you can safely hide-away to whisper secrets over the rim of your glass. The casual-but-friendly approach means you can eat anywhere over the two levels, including the little outdoor oases dotted here and there. With that kind of flexibility it’s hard not to have a good time.
The bar menu has some great pub style snackfoods available till 10pm most nights, like crispy squid and edamame beans. The bistro menu includes seafood platters that add up to great value when shared between two. From the lighter meals standout items like the classic prawn cocktail with iceberg lettuce and seafood dressing don’t fail to deliver. From the mains try braised oxtail pappadelle (with the unmistakable tang of preserved lemon) or duckleg braised in citrus and almond served on a mound of spiced couscous. The wine list has been compiled to deliver more bang for your buck, meaning you’ll be surprised by what you can get for $7-$8 a glass.
