PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThere is something fishy going on in a pretty pocket of Stanmore ever since The Codfather opened his doors. But don’t expect shady characters and standover men in dark streets; think more along the lines of an up-tempo seafood bistro brought to you by the team behind Newtown’s much loved fine diner, Oscillate Wildly. Opened in late 2007, The Codfather has taken up residence in an airy corner shop along Stanmore’s main drag where the business is all about fresh seafood dishes jazzed up with more than a touch of culinary know how.
Javier Carmona is the man responsible for maintaining The Codfather’s reputation as the place to go to for a seafood hit, straight from the Sydney Seafood Market auction floor. Specials scrawled across a whiteboard change daily depending on the freshest fish in town. Each dish has an interesting spin on it that sets it miles apart from your other local fish and chipperies. Give the house smoked ocean trout with shaved fennel, watercress and pomegranate salad a go for starters. Next up could be the market fish in a yeast batter with chips and roast red pepper gazpacho, or perhaps the eggplant and coriander fish curry with crispy rice and lime pickle. Little fans of The Codfather have got their own menu to choose from and groovy placemats on which to unleash their artistic prowess. BYO makes for a night out that is as easy on the hip pocket as it is on the tastebuds.
