Beer, glorious beer. The amber liquid comes in all flavours at this hops heaven, set in a spacious pub-restaurant in the city. It’s a warm, cosy space on a wintry evening – perfect for a quaff and a nibble with mates. The Redoak doors swung open in mid-2004, a reflection of the city’s newfound interest in the ale. With a scholarly appreciation formerly reserved for wine, drinkers are turning their focus to the hops, and beer cafes are popping up across the city. This boutique beer restaurant brews its own range of premium beers, with around 20 available at the bar at any time. These award-winning creations contain no additives or preservatives, and cater to a wide spectrum of tastes. The signature Framboise Froment is brewed in traditional Belgian style and infused with fresh raspberries, creating a sensational flavour. Those with a leaning towards the vino can enjoy the best of both worlds with a Kolsch beer offering hints of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grape, or choose from the quality wine list.

The space is split into dining room and bar, with bar tops made from 700-year-old jarrah timber and simple decor complemented by ornamental flourishes. Head chef Chris Beard has designed his menu with the brew in mind, offering a collation of hearty dishes and thoughtful beer matches. The popular tasting boards are a good option for varied tastes, each offering four canape-style dishes matched to Redoak beers. A main of grain-fed beef fillet comes atop a delightful potato, chive and onion patty, complemented by an eggplant relish and Oatmeal Stout jus. The crispy skinned Tasmanian ocean trout looks picture-perfect with sauteed scallops and cauliflower mash. Choose from the dessert list or get back on the brews with Australia’s first fully Belgian chocolate beer made from Oatmeal Stout and quality dark chocolate.
