Just a short walk from the centre of town, an ominous, double-storey brick building adorned with flags stands guard on a busy street corner. Welcome to PJ Gallagher’s Parramatta. Opened in 1999, this authentic Irish pub has since been given a facelift and yet still retains all of its characteristic charm. Its dark interior is adorned with iron candelabras and stained glass windows, with many a dark wooden stool perfect for perching. The two downstairs bars pump out a popular happy hour, while outside and upstairs guests tuck into traditional Irish tucker.
Pull up a seat at one of the solid timber tables and peruse the menu of cockle-warming comfort food. With a steakhouse section added just six months ago, and a generous gamut of hand-made pizzas on offer, a pint of Guinness may prove good company while making this tricky choice. The signature Burgundy braised lamb shanks, served with potatoes, tomato and a crusty baguette, and the popular beef and Guinness pie topped with Irish mash and caramelised onions, only add to the difficulty. Retire for a drink in the jovial atmosphere of the ground level pub, which offers live music, TAB and entertainment most nights of the week.

Established since 1999, P.J Gallaghers has been taken from the heart of Ireland and placed on the corner of Parkes and Church St, Parramatta. Its authentic Irish atmosphere and design mixed with great entertainment and great food and drink make it one of Australia's grandest and most authentic Irish pubs. Combining old with the new, PJ's has maintained tradition by keeping its authentic Irish pub antiques, but has stayed contemporary through a $4 million dollar refurbishment mid 2004. As a result of the refurbishment, PJ's has become an iconic Pub and features, among other things, a huge outdoor terrace, a top floor used for functions and parties, a gourmet pizza oven, TAB facilites and Gaming rooms and 8 plasma screens.
