When popular Crows Nest haunt The Red Centre closed down suddenly in late 2007, it was hard to imagine that a new eatery could match its reputation. However, with MuMu Grill opening on the site in early 2008, the signs are promising. Choose from three seating areas – funky high-rise stools at the bar, elegant honey-wood tables in the main dining area, or heated outdoor bench-style seating. The adjoining pizza kitchen –MuMu Pizza – carries on the tradition set by the site’s former occupant, but what really makes MuMu unique is its grill.
If its quirky name doesn’t hint to you that beef is a menu mainstay, then a glance at the walls, where you’ll find Warhol-esque prints of cattle, will quickly get the message across. Specialising in grass-fed beef and sustainable produce, meat-lovers can choose from King Island rump with roast garlic mustard, Szechuan pepper-crusted prime rib, and beef fillet wrapped in sage and prosciutto. There’s also a good-looking selection of chicken and seafood dishes, along with a tapas menu that makes for a great introduction to the main course. A comprehensive wine list and an express lunch menu gives MuMu Grill all the elements of a real crowd pleaser. Can MuMu win over the stomachs of Crows Nest regulars? Only time will tell, but it’s off to good start.
