Another piece of Merivale magic, Mr Wong is a Cantonese restaurant, located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. Spread over two levels, the 240-seater restaurant is littered with timeless colonial furnishings coupled with modern touches. With celebrity Chef Dan Hong managing the restaurant, menu highlights include Chinese roasted duck and faux shark fin soup and, of course, the dumplings.

Sprawled over two levels, the 240 seater Mr. Wong located in Bridge Lane, serves traditional and modern Cantonese for both lunch and dinner until 2am.

Every man and his blog has “checked in” at Mr Wong. Foodies, socialites and cashed up executives flock here to experience sexy Cantonese fare and a killer drinks menu that features everything from sake to cider.

Mr Wong is swank central. Spread over two levels, the restaurant is littered with timeless colonial furnishings – quirky lampshades, antique Chinese cupboards and quaint pieces of china – but rather than feeling stale and stuffy, Mr Wong exudes a sultry, ‘I’m-on-the-set of-Sex-in-the City’ vibe. Yes, there are token ‘Chinese restaurant’ touches, like a couple of waving cats, but design king Michael McCann has ensured the end result is all glamour and style.

Mr Wong is cleverly geared for group dining – bookings can only be made for six or more and the restaurant is furnished with mostly round and rectangular tables. The menu, too, is best approached with a horde of hungry friends to ensure you get a taste of at least a few of the 80 dishes on offer.

Mr Wong embodies all the assets of a truly great restaurant. From the moment we walked in the doors, we were met with efficiency and courtesy. We soon forgot about the fact that we had to wait for an hour to get a table, thanks to the two ‘complimentary cocktail’ vouchers we received to use at their sister venue, Palmer and Co, just around the corner. The food refuses to play second fiddle to the restaurant design, with classic dishes such a Chinese roasted duck and soy braised chicken with ginger scallion sauce taking centre stage. Steamed, poached, pan-fried and baked dim sum make up the lunch menu while dinner dishes are graced by roasted meats and live seafood from the tank. We recommend the XO twice-cooked green beans with pork mince and the stir fried chilli king prawns. Both are outstanding. The food doesn’t come cheap but when you consider that Justin Hemmes put in a casual $4 million to give life to Mr Wong’s, the bill isn’t quite as outrageous. The service is smooth enough, perhaps a few more men in tuxedos would help, but the “people-watching” is unparalleled – especially if you nab a table on the top floor with views of the entire restaurant.

The no-bookings policy has meant a visit to Mr Wong has, in hindsight, been regrettably long overdue.

I had guests from interstate so thought I would try Mr Wongs out as generally with Merivale restaurants you cant go wrong. Ambiance was exemplary and food & wine was very nice. The only let down was sevice. We had our entrees arrive and not two minutes following this did they start piling our main courses on the table so we had to pull them up. You expect this at your local asian restaurant but not an establishment like this, that was our only complaint  20/08/2012

Came up from Melbourne to celebrate my wife's birthday. Total dining experience was the best we have ever had. Food fantastic (pork belly and drunken chicken my top 2) Service was fantastic. Loved the decor and overall ambience. Great wine list. Can't fault anything. Not sure if they mistook us for some well known A list celebrities but they gave us our own separate area and treated us like kings. We will be back againreview  18/08/2012

Our Friday night ended up here by 'pleasant' accident - as their first night open to the public, it appeared as though they'd been running for years!! Service was so impeccable from the door to the table, I asked a waiter where they'd all been headhunted from! Ambience was very cosy. Food was tasty and not killer-priced. And each table is positioned nicely so you're not in other patron's faces. Very clever. I don't know why Sydney has taken so long to come up with this recipe for dining success! My only suggestions would be 'sleeking' up the toilet area, some discreet signage which actually points you in the right direction and some other wine selections. (Maybe I was at the wrong bar). Other than that, truly astounded. We had a fabulous time!review  17/08/2012

Exemplary service and super food. Sydney restaurants need to take a leaf out of Mr Wong's book. It was warm and cozy all around something which is hard to find in Sydney. The ambience and decor is also very unique. We will certainly go there again. Two negative points: The toilets are on the upperfloor...a bit difficult when one is on the lower floor and have to climb two flights of stairs. Also the sauce bottles need to be put in finer glassware as the original bottles look a tad bit out of place for a lovely restaurant as this. Otherwise all up thank you Merivale for Mr  12/08/2012
