Definitely not the ideal venue for a romantic first date, Löwenbräu Keller is more about communal cheer than canoodling couples. Waiters are decked out in lederhosen and waitresses sport attention-grabbing bustiers. As they patrol the cavernous beer hall, their hands filled with impossible numbers of litre-beers intended for thirsty patrons, they somehow they manage not to spill a single drop. While the Oom Pah Pah party band plays in the background, look around and note the smiles – this is a restaurant where people come to have fun.
When beer is consumed a litre at a time, you need some serious food to wash it down, so it’s a good thing Löwenbräu’s menu is full of unpronounceable tongue-twisters that signify the hearty Bavarian fare on offer. Groups should start with a platter to share such as the bayrischer brotzeitteller (a selection of smoked and raw hams, salami, potato salad and pickled vegetables served on a wooden board with country bread). For mains, throw caution to the wind and go for the artery-clogging lowenschnitzel (Löwenbräu's giant pork schnitzel served with French fries and herb mayonnaise) or the Nurnberger sausages served with sauerkraut, mashed potato and mustard. Top it all off with a finger of schnapps and a spot of yodelling – staff are on hand to advise the best technique.
