With a bohemian vibe and mismatched furniture, Kawa Cafe in Surry Hills showcases the kind of creative spontaneity that looks so good your cynical side will question the randomness.

The boho vibe and mismatched furniture lends this little cafe a touch of cool. Add to that the exquisite organic produce and you’re onto a winner.
A gorgeous double fronted cafe with large windows that front on to Crown Street; glamorous patrons spill onto the street sitting at the sweet little wrought iron tables, an outdoor couch or just pulling up a milk crate. The entrance-way is overwhelmed by a small kitchen, glass-fronted counters and a large menu blackboard. Wind your way through to the second room which is split over two levels and filled with coveted retro knick-knacks, gorgeous light fittings, mirrors and plants that surround the small tables and lend the cafe a homely feel.

The kitchen follows a similar, free-spirited direction. Produce is predominantly organic with cafe staples given a healthy twist. Start your day with baked beans served on five-grain bread with a selection of sides ranging from the expected bacon and mushrooms through to the sheep’s milk fetta. Lunches include all the traditional healthy gourmet fare; the organic chicken meatball sandwiches come highly recommended. Unfortunately this little cafe is yet to find its feet in regards to the service, with the too-cool and oh-so-attractive nature of the restaurant superseding their desire to get the meals quickly to your table.

Kawa Cafe - User Reviews

strangely normal:

Took a late brunch on a Monday, male staffer in a double jean outfit greeted me like a family member who had come home for lunch. Good Start. Street seating wasn't going to happen because when the suns out you’ve got to be quick. Inside has a mezzanine, it’s a cool little perch to eat alone and watch others move about or life pass by. Service was polite and prompt, the waiter was engaging and great for a breezy conversation. The Coffee was smooth and balanced. Also it’s a nice place to just sit and gawk at fresh-faced, beautiful types. The best looking girls in Sydney appear to be magnetized to this cafe and I wasn't complaining. I went for the KAWA organic breakfast, beans bacon sourdough etc, It was done well and I was very satisfied. Prices are up there for a street cafe in a busy, competitive precinct but I guess it illustrates their position and popularity on this strip enabling them to charge a premium. How does that old saying go? The price is long forgotten when the quality is the memory. I'm going back and this time I’ll take someone special next time.review 07/08/2011

I am a huge fan of Kawa Cafe with its friendy intimate bohemian vibe and superb food and coffee, its the perfect place to while away a few hours grazing on food, enjoying friends company or that of a good book as the world passes you by. The chicken ball sandwich is cracking and the ploughmans breakfast is highly recommended. I always bring my out of town and overseas friends here and they rave about it.. many repeat visits! Lovely cakes and treats as well if you have a sweet tooth! I love the food here so much I have used them for outside catering as well.review 18/01/2010
