PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThis licensed Bondi cafe is situated on Bondi road, and is the haunt of funky, arty locals. Lay back in one of the window seats of Katipo Coffee House on a Sunday morning and soak up the vibes, with a flat white and a famous Bondi Benny for breakfast.
The first visit to Katipo is always a fascinating experience because there is just so much to look at. It’s choc-full of mismatched second hand furniture and bric-a-brac, on the walls local artists hang their works and posters for gigs compete for your attention, and then there’s the people – a colourful motley crew of cool, beachy, arty, laid-back Bondi locals. So Melbourne? Not quite. The new young, cheeky owners bought the cafe from a couple of New Zealand expats who had bought a little bit of that kiwi cafe culture with them. The new boys main aim is to create a local community feel that people habitually return to; a relaxed, social place to fill a niche they found was lacking in the Sydney cafe scene.
The concept behind the menu is simplicity, sourcing the best produce available they let the ingredients do all the talking. The menu has some interesting items like a range of benedicts and a hippy vego feast, but the real talent is in the weekly specials. Here you can see the creativity at work with some great value items like the scram special (eggs scrambled with various yummy ingredients) and the ever changing omelettes.
Freshly squeezed OJ is always a treat and the house special fruit whips and smoothies are awesome. For a consistently good coffee you cannot beat the Morgans ruby fire blend...delicious and silky smooth.
The dinner sevice (thu- sun) is a smooth blend of live jazz, records spinnin, sexy cocktails and a great selection of meditarranean style tasting plates.
