Although Jones the Grocer is now a nation-wide and international phenomenon, the flagship Woollahra store retains a small, neighbourhood feel that is quaint and welcoming. One gets the feeling that this is the kind of place that doesn’t really exist anymore, that you could step into a different speed by walking in here, adopt a sense of time from a few decades ago. Not that it’s boring, more that it feels like you could spend a whole afternoon here with a large pot of freshly brewed French Earl Grey and the world would slow down with you.

This store opened about 15 years ago and was one of the first to have a communal table and walk-in cheeseroom. It’s very clear the emphasis is on quality everything – even the barista is a two time world latte art champion. Here you can buy the best of local and international produce and shop like you’re rich and famous (case in point: the Ferrari-designed Lauretania mineral water bottle). Breakfast and lunch are served seven days a week and everything on the menu can be bought in the delicatessen. There are few cafes where you can have your eggs with the smoked salmon Tetsuya’s uses. This standard of produce is worth the few extra dollars. (ps. Check the website for events and cheese nights).
