Perched in an enviable position on the crest of North Bondi, Jo and Willy’s Depot is a well-loved cafe-cum-wine-bar serving all-day brekkie and some terrific tasting plates. Inhabiting a corner building on the Brighton Boulevard intersection, the current crowd took over in June 2008, transforming the former eatery into its current breezy incarnation. It’s a family affair, with Heather Turland and her son Guy (a former chef at est. and Icebergs) manning the helm. This coveted haunt offers glimpses of the glittering strip of sand and swimmers below, and a menu that reflects the health-conscious lifestyles of its North Bondi regulars. Saunter from beach to table and tuck into some delightful mod Oz dishes plucked straight from the sea or fresh from the earth.

The Depot menu orbits around a preference for organic meat, free-range eggs and fresh produce, with many dairy-free and gluten-free dishes making well-timed appearances. Locals flock to the cafe from 6am each morning, digging into the kitchen’s legendary pancake breakfasts and kick-starting coffee. Lunch is dished up every day, or pop in on a Friday or Saturday night when the lights are dimmed and wine glasses filled. A tempting line-up of tasting plates encourage sharing, so grab some friends and order the seared yellow fin tuna steak with wild mushrooms and wasabi green pea puree; spice-crusted beef carpaccio with fromage daffinois, beetroot and porcini salt; and parmesan-crusted organic pork cutlet with pork crackling, basil, cherry tomato and balsamic reduction. A salad of green peas, mint, spinach and pesto provides the necessary greens, and a well-rounded wine list ensures glasses are never left empty for long. Keep in mind that the cafe does not take bookings for lunch, but large groups are advised to phone ahead.
