A slice of Melbourne has been found in an unlikely area. Hummingbird restaurant is nestled in the streets of Ultimo directly beneath the boutique Vulcan Hotel and it is reminiscent of the kind of groovy little dwelling you might find in Toorak. Think global, eat local is the motto here and before you know it you’ll be sitting by the log fire with a glass of French champagne and a plate of Spanish delights. Besides its cosy interior, Hummingbird also boasts a simply fantastic designer courtyard area, perfect for those balmy evenings, breakfast in the sun or a pre-dinner tipple.
Bundle your dining buddies in and order off the cuff. None of the dishes are over $12 so you can afford to create your own sharing banquet. The plates are all generally served with sides of condiments and dips which add extra pizzazz to the already delicious ingredients. Begin with some organic sourdough garlic bread which comes with a tomato and goat’s cheese spread. Spiced calamari comes served with a blue cheese dunking sauce and the pork and duck terrine is matched with red onion jam and toast. It’s obvious to see the European influences shine throughout your meal however elements of Australiana shout g’day with quirky tit-bits such as kick ass olives and the bacon and egg sarnie. Sticky date pudding and chocolate brownies are old time favourites which finish with renewed twists of deliciousness.
