LOCATIONKings Cross.
DETAILSIt seems everywhere you look in Sydney there is another hip pizzeria opening up. Hugo’s Bar Pizza was one of the first, with entrepreneur business partners and brothers Peter and David Evans noticing the gap in Sydney’s dining scene, well before most, and filling it admirably with a funky bar/pizzeria catering to Sydney’s young socialites. Situated below the Hugo’s Lounge, one of Kings Cross’s hottest nightspots, Hugo’s Bar Pizza combines funky nightspot with easy-to-handle sustenance.
FOOD & BEVERAGEHead chef John Lanzafame focuses the menu on the best seasonal produce and real, home-style Italian cooking. You won’t find tandoori chicken pizzas here, instead devour a traditional Margherita (made with real Italian buffalo milk mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and basil), or opt for the puttanesca (topped with tomato, chilli, olives, capers, anchovies and parsley). If you aren’t in the mood for a pizza, there are plenty of alternatives; start with blue swimmer crab frittata, or sample the tasting plate for two, featuring carpaccio, Italian meatballs, fried calamari and a delicious fig salad. Traditional mains such as spaghetti with meatballs and chicken parmigiana are bound to please. The bar is well stocked, with plenty by the glass, and a selection of Italian and reserve wines on offer.
