The quirky interior and breezy atmosphere of this side-street Newtown haunt is conducive to leisurely dining, offering the ideal spot for a lingering meal with the mob or the ideal solo pit-stop when stamping the King Street strip. Open folding glass doors create an alfresco atmosphere – the perfect respite when the summer heat sets in. Thick-set wooden tables and patterned ottomans contrast with retro wallpaper and oversized lampshades. Pop in for breakfast and lunch seven days, or dinner Tuesday to Saturday.
Hoochie Mamma’s hearty brekkies are a great way to start the day; order a cup of steaming coffee and settle in for French toast, ricotta hotcakes, sweet corn fritters or a big breakfast of free-range eggs, crispy bacon, mushrooms, roasted tomato, hash browns, sausage and toast. The kitchen’s European-inspired cuisine makes for a satisfying lunch, with baguettes, burgers, pizza, pasta, risotto and salads all on offer. Dinner sees the lights dimmed and the menu changed, with a host of small dishes and mains making an appearance. Cast an eye over the blackboard for daily specials or begin with grilled prawns swimming in olive oil, chilli and parsley, or load a slice of sourdough with aged Serrano prosciutto, bocconcini and seeded mustard. Parmesan-crusted chicken schnitzel with tomato and leek concasse, aioli and mixed leaf salad makes for a satisfying main, or try the seared 200g scotch fillet steak with smashed chat potatoes, balsamic eschalots, and a watercress and veal jus. A good selection of beer, wine and spirits will wash it down, or bring along a bottle. Settle in to the mellow vibe or take your goodies away.
