The Flying Squirrel emits a magnetic red glow from its snug position on the corner of Bondi Road’s funkiest dining strip. It’s unclear whether this is the result of its candle-lit tables or just the radiating warmth of jovial diners high on bellinis and red wine. This wonderfully eclectic tapas parlour attracts a combination crowd of urban hipsters and beachside locals. More often than not, the place is filled to capacity with chatty patrons sharing plates of succulent, flavoursome tapas as if they were chilling out in their own inner city apartments. The famously quirky interior is wallpapered with sepia-soaked comic book pages. The upstairs and downstairs dining rooms feel as though they have been cobbled together with the appendages of different buildings – a mantelpiece here and an unexpectedly low doorway there. This disjointed decor is a perfectly imperfect fit for the offbeat collection of Flying Squirrel diners.

While the restaurant’s disorderly charm keeps the atmosphere lively and laid-back, the menu is an impressively coherent selection of modern Australian tasting plates with Asian, Italian and Spanish influences. Crunchy, salt-sprinkled edamame is a good accompaniment to a playful evening cocktail, or try the deliciously rustic bruschetta with a glass of “Bobby Dazzler” (2007 Journeys End Shiraz, SA). The main tasting plates are neatly sorted into their place of origin. Zucchini flowers with goat’s curd “From the garden” are as yummy as a fresh spring day and the Angus beef skirt “From the land” proves that tapas are not just for faint hearted snackers. Like a great neighbourhood party, the Flying Squirrel can always be counted on for fun crowds, finger food and amusing conversations with friends and strangers alike.
