PROFILED BY DE GROOTSUnique among the delis and bakeries of Summer Hill, Fare Nosh moved from Crows Nest three years ago and the north shore regulars still can’t forget it, often making the trip across the harbour to revisit their old favourite. The dining room is small (seats 30), but beautifully decorated in minimalist style. The long and narrow space boasts white walls hung with lovely charcoal nudes on one side and an old-fashioned, gilded mirror on the other. The magenta feature wall at the back contrasts nicely with the dark-wood tables and floorboards and the brown banquette set against it is very inviting.
The menu, which changes every three months, is equally attractive. The bread, baked fresh on the premises, should accompany every meal. Unless you’re a coeliac that is, in which case you get to choose from the separate coeliac menu (rare indeed). Start with the chick pea pancake with eggplant chutney and minted yoghurt or the salted cuttlefish served on seaweed salad with pickled ginger mayonnaise. Popular mains include the fish filo (dory baked in filo pastry with rocket pesto and hollandaise) and the seafood antipasto platter (also good to share as an entree). Finish with red wine-poached nashi pear crumble. This is a great little BYO with a very reasonable corkage of $2.50 per person.
