PROFILED BY DEGROOTSYet another nugget in the gastronomic goldmine that is Potts Point, The Dumpling and Noodle House on Victoria Street has been serving home-made Northern Chinese meals for nearly three years now. The restaurant comprises a tiny dining room on street level and a kitchen downstairs; communication takes place via a pulley system that sends your order down and a few minutes later magically reappears with a steaming plate of dumplings. If you’re heading over between Thursday and Saturday it’s best to book ahead, however, turnover is relatively fast so if you don’t mind going across the road for a coffee then you’ll be fine.
Almost all the dumplings and noodles are made in-house and are great value for money. Before the noodles are cooked they are steamed in sauce to give them colour and flavour. Dumplings come either fried (potstickers) or steamed with dipping sauce, with 8 or 12 dumplings per serve. Try the lamb and pork for a filling meal, or the prawn or vegetable if you have a lighter palate. Other traditional dishes include sang choi bau with pork mince or egg, and hot and sour soup served with dumplings of your choice. The menu is vegetarian friendly, and they allow BYO beer and wine at $2 corkage per person.
