PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAYou wouldn’t expect a custom built motorcycle showroom to offer the sort of cafe that the latte sipping set, let alone a mother’s club, would feel at home in. But that’s exactly what you’ll find at Deus Cafe. Attached to the showroom of Deus Ex Machina (Latin for “God is in the machine”), Deus Cafe sprouted from the odd cup of Di Lorenzo coffee offered to showroom customers looking for a spot to sit and ponder the grunting custom designed machines next door. It must have been pretty damn good coffee, because Deus Cafe now occupies a cavernous space with a definite industrial feel that is more funky than blokey and a buzzing hum that a Deus Ex Machina motorcycle would be envious of.
Chunky, wooden communal tables and rattan couches perch upon polished concrete floors, hosting chatty groups that drop in for the aforementioned fabulous coffee and a bite to eat. Deus Cafe serves up a mean big breakfast ideal for soaking up the sins of the previous evening, while their lunch menu is fresh and simple, providing the fuel you need to get you through the afternoon in the form of pizzas, steak sandwiches and pasta. For an afternoon sugar hit pop in and grab a cannolli, perfect with a cup of tea or a short black. Deus Cafe has some grand plans to obtain a liquor license and remain open for evening meals, but with its social club vibe don’t be surprised if you arrive for lunch and are still there hours later with a glass of wine and dinner on the way.
