A Good Food Guide stalwart, Castle Hill's Cibo e Vino is an intimate little Italian restaurant with a lot of heart. This cosy neighbourhood eatery is unfussy and welcoming, specialising in artisanal pasta dishes that won't break the bank. A good selection of antipasti and pizza are also on offer, ensuring that everyone who dines at Cibo e Vino leaves very happy.

It’s always commendable to see a suburban restaurant shuffle a little outside the comfort zone. Take Cibo e Vino, for example. Instead of dishing up a safe, unchanging menu, Cibo hammers home the freshest-is-best philosophy by creating a seasonal menu and tweaking it daily. It’s understandable when you discover chef Paul Toogood honed his skills for a time at The River Cafe – impressive credentials in anyone’s book. Like the lofty London establishment, Cibo focuses on clean, unpretentious Italian flavours – bold, simple tastes designed to transport you to sun-kissed tomato vineyards and olive tree studded fields.

The room itself is pleasantly unfussy, melding minimalist clean lines with rustic colours. It’s small but not quite cramped with affable service adding to the intimacy of the space. Entrees might include a smoked eel salad, or be as simple as asparagus with gorgonzola dolce and black pepper. The handmade gnocchi is held in high esteem, and mains run from char-grilled duck with beetroot, silverbeet, cherries and verjus, to kingfish with marinated zucchini, herbs and olives. Dessert-wise, the orange and nougat ice cream is a permanent fixture of the menu for good reason. It’s truly refreshing to see a fiercely food-focused establishment in the Hills. Unfortunately it’s somewhat hidden on a traffic-heavy corner of Old Northern Road. Hopefully, the food alone will be enough to see them through.

Hi Pinky, We’re so sorry to hear that you didn’t have the best time at Cibo e Vino. Usually the dishes on the menu are as described and we do offer a variety of vegetable sides that our regular customers seem to love including: Rocket and pear salad, Green beans tossed with butter and roasted almonds and Brussel sprouts sautéed with speck and garlic. We are definitely looking into what seemed cause such tension in the kitchen that evening and hopefully next time you come in, you’ll enjoy a much lovelier ambience. I went there for my birthday on 23/11/11 with my husband. The food was alright. I think my husband liked his seared scallops entree. My Grass-fed fillet of beef with polenta chips 230g just came as beef with chips. There was no veggie at all. This was the first time that I have ordered steak in a restaurant without any veggies. I wasn't sure if the chef has forgotten. The other thing that stood out was the 'ambience'. We were sitting 2 tables away from the kitchen window. It was not difficult to guess who among the 2 chefs was the chef and who was the assistant. The chef (Woon) was telling the other chef off. Though it was not loud but you could hear that it was not pleasant. I'm not sure if all chefs behave this way like on some of the reality chef shows but I feel that it doesn't portray a good image of the restaurant. It was a Wednesday night and there were only 5 tables occupied. If the Chef couldn't cope with serving 5 tables, I can't imagine how it is like when the restaurant is full. If the Chef can't talk in a normal tone, perhaps the kitchen window should be sealed and no customer has to hear him.review  30/11/2011
