I had visions of Chimmi Churri before I even set foot in the restaurant. The tables would be filled with blokes wearing stubbies and singlets, drinking VB out of a can and swinging huge hunks of meat into their mouths. Feet dragging, I crossed underneath the giant flashing Coca Cola sign and made my way to the caged entrance of this South American hotspot.

As I entered the black wrought iron gate, suddenly all my preconceived visions evaporated into thin air. I couldn’t see a VB or a bloke in a singlet in sight. Instead, tealight candles seductively flickered on the elegantly set tables, a mix of elegant women in stilettos and silk dresses and men in pressed shirts made up the clientele and as for the hunks of meat. Well, they just looked delicious.

I had thought a nice piece of fish or perhaps some empanadas would do but as the waiters wandered around the restaurant with metal skewers of moist meat, my country blood got the better of me. I had to get the $45 churrasco, all you can eat option. Rounds upon rounds upon rounds of perfectly cooked beef, lamb, chicken, seafood – gosh, I can’t even remember what I ate. Not one mouthful disappointed.

I think Oscar Wilde may be right. “When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me.”
