Suddenly, once the old heavy wooden door closes behind you, neon-lit Liverpool Street in Sydney's CBD is half a world away. If you've ever been to Spain, this authentic Spanish restaurant in Sydney's Spanish Quarter will bring back the smells, sights and sounds of your travels. And if you haven't been to Spain, well...the authenticity of Capitan Torres ensures you're not missing much. It's all here, from the big white, moustache-framed smiles of the friendly wait staff to the Spanish salami hanging from the ceiling. Pop in after work and grab one of the coveted possies at the bar where host, Manuel, will keep the sangria flowing. You can choose from a selection of tapas which include succulent meatballs, plump prawns in a rich garlic and tomato sauce, BBQ octopus and Spanish salami in the most divine spicy sauce. Capitan Luis de Torres, was the first European to discover the North East coast of Australia on his epic exploration of the largely uncharted South Pacific Ocean. In 1605 he sailed between Australia and New Guinea through the straight that now bears his name. He did not however recognise the importance of his discovery, and did not claim Australia for Spain, this being left to Captain James Cook some 170 years later. This cultural loss is being overcome with the growth of the Spanish District in Sydney. And all the pleasures of Spanish cuisine are available at Capitan Torres, one of our most popular restaurants for almost thirty years, it offers all the pleasures of Spain, including late night dining (till 11pm), bar with Tapas and some of the most authentic cuisine this side of Madrid.
