PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA This Alexandra institution is a constant hive of activity, with patrons patiently waiting outside to snag a table every Saturday and Sunday. Renowned for its top-notch breakfast menu, the humble cafe is all about embracing quality produce. From the small market of fresh produce and jarred goodies inside the cafe to the food that arrives on each diner’s plate, the Bitton fresh-produce philosophy illuminates. The coffee is Grinders, the artisan bread is courtesy of Brasserie and Bitton’s meat produce comes from Game Farm.
In the mornings, Bitton cafe is full of frenetic caffeine-fuelled energy as diners tuck into platefuls of savoury crepes, spicy lamb sausages, home-made granola and freshly baked muffins however, at night, the mood softens. The bistro is an elegant space with exposed brick walls, unpolished wooden floorboards and dimmed lighting. The menu is equally refined with dishes such as citrus-cured salmon with shaved fennel and lime aioli and pumpkin cannelloni with spinach, feta and tomato fondue. For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert menu creates excitement with white chocolate parfait with ginger snaps, French crepes with Bitton’s famous stawberry vanilla jam and a mango mess with passionfruit caramel.
