Bistro CBD would be one of Sydney city’s best kept secrets if it weren’t for the fact that the regulars play Chinese whispers, passing the message from one city-sider to the next. Once you’re let in on this not-so-confidential piece of information you’ll discover that what was once a National Australia Bank has been restored into a chic, yet elegant restaurant with a crowning French-inspired menu. A spiralling staircase from the ground floor of the Hotel CBD bar leads hungry suits and stylers up and into Bistro CBD. The Merivale group who own this restaurant are renowned for its high standards of professionalism and the roaring lunch time trade is evidence that diners agree.
Without losing its Victorian charm, the dining room is unfussy, yet graceful with its Romanesque pillars and arched windows overlooking the busy streets below. The kitchen is run under the capable guidance of Simon Dragicevich who has accrued an impressive resume over the years. To start, try his grilled quail which is placed on crisp polenta and served with caponata and a drizzle of balsamic jus. Follow with a favourite of CBD fans, the roasted rack of lamb with crepinette of neck, parsnip puree, roast tomatoes and minted peas. End on an even higher note with a flourless pineapple and coconut cake with butterscotch sauce and pineapple sorbet. Bistro CBD is a well hidden gem in the city, but once you find out about this restaurant oasis, you won’t be able to keep it a secret.
