PROFILED BY DEGROOTS MEDIAHidden down a Bondi sidestreet, this little cafe provides a haven for the health conscious, vegetarian and diabetic. All the food and drink is organic and sugar free (when it arrives at your table) but owners Teresa and Francis have refused to compromise on taste, believing that good food and healthy food can be one and the same. They take their food seriously, sourcing organic produce from Flemington markets twice weekly, and acquiring their organic coffee from Campos.
The cafe was opened seven years ago with Teresa in the kitchen. An experienced fine dining chef, Teresa never felt comfortable with the rich and unhealthy food she was serving customers. With a vegetarian partner and a son with food allergies, she concentrated her skills on creating food that was both delicious and healthy. At Bamboo the emphasis is on fresh, quality ingredients cooked with love. No shortcuts, no processed goods. And the food tastes better for it. The cafe is open Thursday to Sunday from 7am-2pm. Try the gluten and sugar free buckwheat pancakes, or fill yourself up with a meat free Big Breakfast. Bamboo Cafe also provides a service allowing you to order a box of organic produce, which can be picked up from the cafe or delivered to your home. Sarah Theeboom, December 2006
