Profiled by de Groots

As the mantra goes: location, location, location. Amo Roma sits smack bam on George Street as you enter The Rocks, opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art. Hungry wanderers from the city, the Quay and The Rocks are lured off the street by the pretty sandstone and stained glass facade of the heritage-listed building. Inside, three storeys and two outdoor dining areas give weary sightseers a place to put their feet up and try some hearty Italian food. Pizza, pasta and risottos are plentiful, and for the carb-conscious diner there is meat and seafood to satisfy. Ask about the daily pizza special or try the signature Amo Roma pizza with fresh tomato, mozzarella, Italian salami, capsicum, mushroom and smoked cheese.

The pasta list is too extensive to cover, suffice to say that all tastes are satisfied. If you’re in a briny mood choose from tuna carpaccio, lemon pepper calamari, grilled scallops or king prawn diavola. Chargrilled beef tenderloin with wild mushroom sauce adds a rustic touch, but to put some hair on your chest rip into the veal escalope with raw ham, mozzarella and chunky sage tomato sauce. If you’re dieting don’t even look at the dessert menu; with five different cheesecakes, tiramisu, profiteroles, sticky date pudding and chocolate mud cake (to name just a few) your self-control won’t stand a chance.
