PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAAfrican Feeling is down the long end of King Street, where things slow down a bit and you have more time to consider hair extensions or a career in hydroponics. It is here that you will find the small African canteen appropriately named “African Feeling”. One is drawn in by the murmur of low soft voices like the clap of elephant feet and the strangely soft, beguiling light inside. It’s the kind of spot that will suit casual folks who want to catch up with a friend or two for a bottle of wine and some spicy comfort food. The cuisine is varied and comes from a range of different nations on the African continent, making it one of the most novel eateries in Newtown. The menu democratically includes Nigeria, Ehtiopia and Kenya on one page. Sure, the cuisines are jumbled together but the overall feeling is one of adventure.
You will eat plantain (the deep friend green bananas that unfailingly taste great), sticky okra with rice, and savoury doughnuts that are true favourite with anyone who knows and loves hearty African fare. What you will enjoy here are tastes that you don’t always see. New blends of spices both savoury and sweet surprise the senses (even more enjoyable if you don’t mind oil). African Feeling will give you an authentic African feeling just as its name promises. Prices are really reasonable, the food is always filling and it provides good competition for the older Newtown African restaurants that are slowly losing their appeal.
