Afous restaurant in Mosman is a smartly dressed eatery that marries Moroccan and Spanish cuisine in Tapas style dishes. Dining here is an experience in hospitality, with a touch of theatre; guests are welcomed with drops of fragrant rosewater poured onto their palms and meals are completed with an impressive display of mint tea-pouring from silver pots. With views over Middle Harbour, the restaurant is the perfect place to linger.

Situated at the Spit in Mosman.

Dark mahogany ceilings and furnishings add to the sophistication of the space, accentuated by latticed wooden parapets. Demure down lighting and candlelit tables create a moody atmosphere offset by the large dragonfly lantern hanging at the entrance, which casts a rainbow of colours onto the roof. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows have been carefully considered to take in the glorious views of Middle Harbour. Born in Morocco, and raised in the kitchen’s of Casablanca, Omar arrived on the shores of Australia in 1987 teaming up with celebrity chef Hassan M’souli and introducing Sydneysiders to the spicy aromas of Moroccan cuisine. Following the success of his previous establishments - Souk In the City, Mosquito Bar, Dar Essalem Casablanca, Out of Africa and most recently Tajine, Omar’s current dining vision is to take Moroccan cuisine and fuse it with the traditional flavours of southern Spain.

The menu trends effortlessly between Moroccan and Spanish flavours featuring tapas style dishes to share or more substantial main meals. North African Zaater bread is a good way to get the ball rolling with home-style garlic prawns to follow. There is a good selection of fish and meat courses with the likes of crispy skin snapper fillet with an orange and red bean sauce and mixed aromatic herbs salad. The spiced lentil potato cake and the grilled eggplant and haloumi salad will keep vegetarians happy. Afous successfully combines the sensual aromatic flavours of North Africa and the sumptuous, savoury style of Southern Spain. Pair your meal with a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc or indulge in a classic cocktail.

Michael Fischer:

Sometimes the God's are smiling on unsuspecting diners. 4 of us wanted something different on a Sunday night and we had heard some amazing stories about the recently opened Afous. This location has had a difficult history over the last couple of years but with such stunning views over Middle Harbor and plenty reasonably convenient parking there is no reason why Afous should no be a great eating place on the North Shore. Omar is probably the most gracious and gentle host in Sydney. Warm and knowledgeable he greeted us as family. We left the ordering to him and were treated to one of the most delicious meals I have eaten for a long time. Their individual take on "bruschetta" was unbelievable. Sumptuous, crunchy and interesting. The shared plates of crab felafel with sweet corn and the corn fed chicken and leek caramalized leeks caused fights as to who was to eat the last piece. Scallops with scented orange blossom was so different to many of the dowdy scallop offerings around town. A crisp risotto flat cake with grilled prawns was just so light and flavoursome. I just hope that our experience is shared by many others. Omar deserves success at this. He certainly knows what he is doing. locationreview  04/09/2012
