This is not your traditional fish and chip shop as the name A Fish Called Paddo Seafood Emporium implies, but more a small casual restaurant where you can select from a huge variety of seafood to take home to cook or to eat at the wooden communal tables. Fresh, healthy and inexpensive.

PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
Baby sister to Coogee restaurant A Fish Called Coogee) this little restaurant in Five Ways is not your traditional fish and chippery. In fact, fish and chips would be the last thing to order, with the focus at this restaurant is on healthy preparations, interesting flavours and unusual sides. The room is simply decorated with chunky wooden tables and benches and a few tables out the back, in an unadorned (and a little unglamorous) courtyard area. It’s a casual affair; they don’t take bookings, you order at the counter and bring your own alcohol.

The large variety of fish is on display in the glass cabinet that runs the length of the shop; there are half a dozen unadorned varieties, while another dozen are marinating in mouth-watering herbs, spices and sauces. The largely Asian inspired concoctions might include lime and coconut perch, honey and soy salmon or chilli and garlic barramundi. Complement your fish with a side of bok choy, rice, salad, corn on the cob or the ubiquitous chips. There are alternative options for those who don’t want a fillet of fish, but be warned all options are oceanic; the Thai fish cakes are a great starter, while prawns and oysters are available for those of pure palate.
