LOCATIONOn the corner of Bourke Street and Huntley Street in Alexandria ten minutes from the CBD.
DETAILSThe refurbished federation building is a handsome, open-plan space enveloped in chocolate timber panels from the floors to the walls and high-beam ceilings. Exposed brick surfaces and a central glass roof add texture and colour to the space, especially when sun light streams in from above. The pendant lighting creates a moody ambience during the evening that complements the ruby red velvet lounge.
FOOD & BEVERAGEThere are only a handful of seasonal dishes per course, but each deliver in robust flavour and texture, and are well-presented by chef Peter Padlan. Select from a trio of cured meats with ciabatta for entrée or a caramelised onion tart with silky goats curd and balsamic. Main courses come in small and large portions, so sharing dishes is encouraged. The braised lamb shank on parsnip puree with muscatel jus is a popular choice - the meat is tender and almost dissolves on the tongue. Other wintery treats include a duck breast on green lentils, spinach and brussel sprouts, and a bread and butter pudding with rhubarb and macadamia ice-cream for dessert. The bar menu is unpretentious and served at exceptionally wallet-pleasing prices with classic booze-soakers like pizza, schnitzel and fish and chips.
