PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
Who would have thought the quaint little town of Kurrajong Heights, which sits quietly at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, would end up boasting a two-hatted restaurant? Fellow village restaurants were once stuck in a time warp of dated Australiana dishes using limp, unseasonal vegies, despite the abundant surrounding hobby farms and local producers. That was until Monique and Tony stumbled upon a cute cottage called Lochiel House and started making food driven by the fruits of the region.

While lavender bushes flower out the front of the colonial-style house, the back garden is sewn with herbs, vegetables and fruit that the couple grow together and serve on their menu. Fine dining is made homely and comforting within the pocketed rooms of that cottage, each with their own fireplaces and antique chandeliers.

There are not many chefs in Sydney who cite an ashram for defining their culinary style, but a two-year stay at a yoga retreat instilled in the pair a treatment of food that honours the earth and body. Their contemporary Australian dishes, whilst driven by natural, earthy characteristics, are presented in a style which hints to their time spent at Rockpool and Bayswater Brasserie. Dry-aged organic grass-fed wagyu is served with grated horseradish, warm golden egg yolk and nutty mushroom crisp, and decorated with chrysanthemum leaves. For main, warm asparagus, sweet sugar snaps and broad beans tie together and accompany a tender white fillet of bass grouper that has been pan-roasted and finished with fish roe emulsion. Free range pork neck has been slow-cooked while a chilli and palm sugar caramel poured over the rosy meat is absorbed by coconut rice as roasted peanuts add salty savour. For dessert, soft-as-a-cloud meringue roulade is served with strawberries-and-cream comfort, blush-coloured rosé jelly, and buttery shortbread pebbles.

Lochiel House creates dishes that sing with natural flavours and are plated in fine dining style, but are served in country comfort.

Lochiel House - User Reviews

doug &chris:

Recently celebrated our anniversary at Lochiel. An awesome experience. Service exceptional with superb food. If we have an observation it is that we would have liked a selection of side dishes with our mains; ie green salad etc. Hey I'm nitpicking about perfection. The coffee was superb and am still trying to duplicate the taste with the blend Lochiel uses from the coffee warehouse. To cap it all I got a hug from Monique! Will be back; if only for another hug!review 15/03/2012

Lochiel House is without exception, exceptional! We discovered this delightful restaurant in a charming old historic house by chance several years ago when we commuted regularly between the Central West and Sydney. We can honestly say that it is impossible to have a bad experience here. Food (sourced locally) is fantastic, and chef Tony Milroy and his team are real artists with its presentation. Co-owner Monique Maul is a truly delightful lady; warm, friendly and hospitable; a perfect hostess. Wines are beautfully matched to the food, service and value are excellent and atmosphere is great - local artists are also supported as their work is displayed for diner's enjoyment while they dine; some of the artworks are available for purchase. Lochiel fully deserves its two hats. Congratulations, Monique, Tony and team - you've earned it! As the Terminator says, "We'll be back!"review 27/11/2011

Without question, Lochiel House is the Restaurant not to miss in the Hawkesbury region. We have been there several times since our first visit two years ago, and are never disappointed. Even when we travel out of the area and dine at another restaurant, nothing can compare to the exceptionally high standard and quality of Lochiel House. You can not have a disappointing meal here. The food and atmosphere are a credit to Monique, Tony, and the wonderful staff they have working with them.review 23/10/2007
