A stunning fusion of Australian and Eurasian food has won Ashcroft's at Blackheath in the Blue Mountains a Chef's Hat in The Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide three years running. Now a tourist destination for many visitors to the mountain and epicurean locals, the warm dining room of this acclaimed restaurant makes every dinner an occasion to remember.

Near the corner of Station Street and Govetts Leap Road. Close to Blackheath train station.

DETAILS
The humble shopfront opens up into a white-washed dining room with dark timber floors, white linen-draped tables and walls adorned with striking black-and-white photographs. The space is washed in a warm, golden glow, whilst candle-lit tables provide a romantic setting to woo your sweetheart in the evening. There is a pretty art space upstairs, where diners can enjoy an aperitif whilst they browse through the works of the regions most celebrated artists. The seasonally driven menu of well-crafted classics and contemporary twists on old favourites has enabled Chef Corinne Evatt to showcase her simple, yet innovative cooking style, and commitment to the regions bounties. Dine on the likes of pear, wild rocket and candied walnut salad with grana padano, goat curd, hibiscus oil dressing and speck confetti for entrée or a dish of hot smoked eel strudel on saffron beurre blanc with a raw tomato and spanish olive tapenade. Mains include full-flavoured dishes of chorizo, caraway and parsley crusted lamb rack baked medium, on a rustic romesco sauce as well as umbrian rabbit fricassee with pork and veal fricadelles. All main courses are served with sides of layered potatoes and seasonal vegetables. There are only four desserts listed on the menu, and all are equally indulgent. The house made profiteroles with grand marnier laced crème patissiere and dark chocolate fudge sauce are particularly sinful, and well accompanied by an award winning wine list.

We’ve lived in the mountains for years but never made the effort to dine in Blackheath. Ashcrofts makes the effort worthwhile. Despite the shopfront location, the white linen formality of the place looks a little uninviting but don't be fooled. The hostess and staff make it as friendly a place as you're ever likely to visit. The menu is interesting (in a good way) and there's plenty on the wine list to choose from. As first timers we were conservative with our selections. The duck was fantastic, as was the beef. My wife raved about her caramel hatted dessert. The profiteroles were a little rich for my taste but I lay no claim to being a big fan of desserts anyway. It's not a cheap place to eat. We had a few drinks to start plus a bottle of wine at about $50. The total bill was about $260. We're definitely going back.review  13/11/2011
